Kappa Alpha Psi is the first fraternity founded on the west of the Appalachian Mountains. The Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity was originally called Kappa Alpha Nu before the changing of its name on April 5, 1915.

Kappa Alpha Psi was established by ten African American students at the University of Bloomington to provide an alternative to school organizations whose membership were exclusively based on racial criterion and also to strengthen the bond of friendship among African American students.
